What is Podiatry?

Podiatrists undergo years of specialist education and are highly skilled health professionals trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs to keep people mobile and active.

All Podiatrists have to be registered with and are regulated by the health and Care Professions council or HCPC.

Podiatrists are expected to follow a strict code of conduct in their practice and have to demonstrate continual professional development (continuous learning and updating of knowledge).

The names “Podiatrist” and “Chiropodist” are protected and regulated titles under UK law.

Why see a Podiatrist?

The foot is a complex structure of 26 bones 214 ligaments and 38 muscles. Not only can the foot instantly adapt to cope with carrying our bodies over different terrains and environments. But they also contend and compensate for issues in other parts of the body e.g. the back, pelvis knee and ankle. Compensations at this level can often create changes in how the foot functions.

Treatment by a Podiatrist often involves the prescribing of insoles (orthotics) which can be handmade custom devices specifically designed for each patient’s feet. This process involves taking a plaster of Paris impression of your feet and sending these “foot casts” off to a laboratory with a prescription from Jason for manufacture. Treatment can also involve strengthening and conditioning and foot mobilization, combined with extensive training and footwear advice. Occasionally patients may need to be referred by Jason to their GP or a Consultant and sometimes other Allied Health Practitioner as part of their treatment.
